At Atlas School, we are committed to providing our students opportunities to connect with employers as they progress through their learning journey. Events like our Fireside Chats enable students to engage with recruiters, technical experts, and C-suite executives from local companies.
Our Employer Spotlight shines a light on the organizations that connect with our program, exploring their innovative work, unique industry contributions, and the insights they share with our students.
This month, we spotlight Canoo, a company that has developed breakthrough electric vehicles that are reimagining the automotive landscape.
What is Canoo/Technologies?
Canoo is an American high-tech, sustainable mobility company on a mission to bring EVs to everyone. Their bold innovations in design, pioneering technologies, and unique business model are at the forefront of the industry. Canoo was founded in 2017, and is guided by an experienced and diverse leadership team with a rich background in automotives and EVs.
Canoo has a strong presence locally, with facilities in Pryor and OKC. They’re responsible for producing the first ever Oklahoma-manufactured EVs, which were delivered to the State of Oklahoma last year. They have announced additional deliveries to NASA, USPS, and the U.S. Army.
Unlocking Keys to Career Success in Tech - Fireside Chat Recap
We invited Kyle Hooper, Director of Government Affairs, and Michael Stough, Microsoft Technologies Cloud Architect, to explain Canoo’s mission to our students, and share their insights on what it takes to be a successful professional within the tech industry.
Michael emphasized the importance of staying up-to-date in your field beyond school, and being able to articulate what that looks like in conversations with employers. Whether it be articles, programming books, even Reddit, there are numerous resources available on the latest technologies. A commitment to continuous learning shows you are ready to apply yourself, and will always prove useful as technology continues to evolve.
Both Kyle and Michael echoed, while technical skills are important, solid practical and soft skills are needed to achieve success. Communication should always be a priority, particularly in remote work environments. Proactivity is key - reaching out to coworkers early and often when encountering problems or inconsistencies is a positive habit.
Internal project management is another core component of success. Having the ability to manage projects and work efficiently with others is necessary in any workplace. Additionally, good documentation practices will help you keep track of notes and solutions for future review. Effectively capturing details of previous projects can set you up to directly learn from past experiences.
Several student questions spotlighted the interview process, and asked for guidance on how to best prepare themselves as they explore entry-level positions. Kyle encouraged students to maintain a consistent LinkedIn presence, through industry-relevant posts and connections. Setting yourself apart as an active and engaged member of your industry can be the edge you need in an application process.
