This month, we spotlight Lufthansa Technik, a leading provider of aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification services for civil aircraft. We had the pleasure of hosting Lufthansa Technik on our campus to meet directly with our students and alumni this past month! We’ll share the insights from their visit below, after sharing a bit about what they do as a company.

What is Lufthansa Technik?

Lufthansa Technik is a global leader in aircraft maintenance, repair, overhaul, and modification services, catering to a wide range of aircraft from commercial to VIP and special mission aircraft. With international licenses for maintenance, design, and production, Lufthansa Technik offers tailored maintenance programs, modifications, completions, and conversions. The company also provides innovative cabin products, material pooling, engine services, and digital fleet support.

Their Tulsa operation employs about 360 people with plans to double by 2030. The Tulsa location focuses on maintenance repair and overhaul and seeks employees with a background in tech, especially as they expand. 

The Role of Technology in Lufthansa Technik's Mission:

Lufthansa Technik integrates technology deeply into its Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations. Here’s how technology plays a crucial role:

Digital Tech Ops Ecosystem:
Lufthansa Technik is at the forefront of digitalization in MRO through its "Digital Tech Ops Ecosystem." This ecosystem integrates digital solutions from various partners to enhance process efficiency and optimize aircraft availability. Key components include:

  • AMOS: Maintenance, Engineering & MRO software.
  • AVIATAR: A platform for data and analytics solutions.
  • flydocs: Digital records and asset management solutions.

Data-Driven Maintenance:
By leveraging data analytics, Lufthansa Technik implements predictive maintenance, allowing the company to anticipate and address potential issues before they lead to breakdowns. This involves analyzing data from aircraft sensors and other sources to identify trends and patterns.

Digitization of Processes:
The company focuses on digitizing various MRO processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs. This includes digital record-keeping, automated workflows, and the use of digital tools for maintenance tasks.

Innovation and Technology Scouting:
Lufthansa Technik actively seeks out and evaluates emerging technologies, such as nanorobotics and artificial intelligence, for potential applications in MRO. This proactive approach helps the company stay at the forefront of technological advancements in their industry.

Highlight Reel - Fireside Chat:

Last week, we invited James Jackson, People Business Partner, and Stephen Miller, People Relations Specialist, to speak with our students about how their evolving technology skill sets can help Lufthansa Technik achieve its organizational goals.

They highlighted the importance of automation technologies in enhancing productivity across all levels of the organization. Even non-technical roles benefit from simple uses of AI chatbots and other digital tools.

They also emphasized that beyond technical skills, interpersonal skills are key. The tech industry offers opportunities for both introverts and extroverts. While nobody expects you to be the perfect candidate, being honest and transparent about your level of experience is crucial. It’s important to find the balance between confidence in your ability and willingness to take on new concepts.
