Tulsa has recently been designated as a Tech Hub by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA), putting us at the forefront of innovative technology development. This designation, known as THETA (Tulsa Hub for Equitable and Trustworthy Autonomy), focuses on secure and trustworthy autonomy – the safe and dependable use of autonomous systems.
THETA aims to develop, deploy, and manufacture the next generation of autonomous technologies, including drones, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing. This initiative not only boosts our local economy but also creates promising job opportunities across various skill levels.
Atlas School is thrilled to be contributing talent to Tulsa's emergence as a leader in these cutting-edge fields. We sat down with our Machine Learning instructor, Sajid Riaz, to discuss the broader implications of AI and its role in shaping the future of work.
AI is Your New Coworker, Not Your Replacement
"AI will not replace you, but someone who knows how to use AI might."
This insight from Sajid offers an interesting perspective on the AI debate. Consider that the impact of AI is not machines taking over; it's about smart tools helping humans work easier and more efficiently.
Computers used to be the scary new technology, and many worried their jobs would disappear. Instead, they’ve become tools that enhance our everyday work and social lives. Sajid points out that this pattern repeats. "Typewriters used to be a big job, and so was operating a photocopier. AI is just the next step in this evolution."
So, instead of fearing AI, think of it as your new digital support system. It's here to handle the repetitive tasks so you can focus on the creative, strategic aspects of your work that set you apart.
Harnessing AI for Everyday Success Together
It’s important to remember you don't need to be an AI expert to make it work for you. Sajid compares it to using a smartphone – you don't need to know how to build one to use it effectively.
What’s the secret? Learning to communicate with AI effectively. Sajid recommends being "as specific as possible when you're asking AI for something. The more information you give it, the better results you'll get."
Sajid also highlighted the impact of this technology on future generations, and the role we play in educating those after us. "They're going to be living with AI their whole lives. It's up to us to learn these systems so we can teach the next generation how to use them responsibly.
Riding the Wave of Change: Learn to Embrace AI
Change can be daunting, especially when it comes to groundbreaking technology. But as Sajid reminds us, this isn't the first time we've faced technological upheaval. "Remember when everyone freaked out about social media? Now it's just part of everyday life. The same thing will happen with AI."
The key, according to Sajid, is maintaining an open mind. "There's still a lot of work to be done with AI. It's new, and we're all figuring it out together. But avoiding it isn't the answer. The sooner we start working with AI, the better we'll be at using it to improve our lives and our work."
It’s never too soon to start educating yourself and begin embracing change. You can experiment with AI tools in your daily life, maybe to create your grocery list or to keep your personal calendar organized. It may start small, but the more you engage with these tools, the more comfortable and proficient you'll become.
