In an effort to recognize those whose contributions make Holberton Tulsa a welcoming, uplifting community, we have created our Student of the Month Program. Students can nominate their fellow peers for going above and beyond in their coursework and support of their fellow classmates. This student upholds Holberton’s values and helps foster an environment conducive to learning and personal/professional growth.
Congratulations to July’s Student of the Month, Matthew Allen! Here are Matthew’s thoughts about studying at Holberton.
Matthew: I have always been fascinated with computers. While attending school for Mechanical Engineering, I was required to take a few programming courses that used VBA for excel. I was terrible at it, but I absolutely loved it. I found myself struggling to finish the problems, but enjoying it at the same time. When I made the decision to find a new career, I knew computer science was the choice for me.
Matthew: I am planning on taking the Full-Stack Web Development track. I’m so excited about creating my own websites and having a marketable skill. I’m also looking forward to getting into mobile app development – which I have been told is very similar to web dev. My end goal is to be a freelance, remote web and app developer for companies that wish to have a comprehensive web presence. This will allow me to travel whenever, wherever, and for however long I wish – which is especially important to me since my daughter lives in another state.
Matthew: I absolutely love my cohort and other peers. Though I have only been here for a couple of months, I have made so many good lifelong friends – that alone has made it worth it. And similarly, the focus on peer-learning is fantastic. I have learned so much by simply helping other students. On top of this, I am a huge fan of the space – the industrial-modern architecture is just fun to work in.
