Tulsa, Okla | Aug 29, 2022 – Local and state leaders joined Holberton Tulsa officials today to dedicate a new space that will expand access to hundreds of area students pursuing an education in software engineering.
The new 17,000 square-foot expansion is adjacent to the original 9,000 square-foot campus that opened in 2019. The $5.5 million addition expands access for local students and supports Tulsa’s booming technology industry.
“The expansion will improve our ability to build and keep local tech talent,” said Libby Ediger, CEO of Holberton Tulsa. “More people will have an opportunity to experience Holberton’s innovative learning model that teaches students to think and learn like the best programmers and build professional development skills to support their long term career growth.”
“Holberton Tulsa is helping turn our city into a tech-driven hub for technologists and entrepreneurs,” Mayor G.T. Bynum said. “I want to thank Holberton for this historic investment in Downtown Tulsa, and for continuing to realize that one of Tulsa’s greatest assets are the people who are trained in our city for the jobs of tomorrow.”
inTulsa reports local job posts for software developers have increased 116 percent from 2016 to 2021, and monthly job posts for software developers have increased 57 percent this year from January to July. According to tech industry coding developed by Brookings, Tulsa is the ninth fastest growing Tech City among all metropolitan statistical areas, and grew at an unprecedented rate of 75.5 percent over 5 years from 2014-2019.
“Tulsa’s supply of software developers is expected to increase 15 percent by 2026, making it the fastest growing occupation on the aggregate, earning an average salary of more than $50,000 a year,” said Patrick Hosford, partnerships and research analyst for inTulsa.
Since its first student cohort in 2020, Holberton Tulsa is enrolling on average 100 students a year. With the physical footprint now tripling in size, the school expects to train five times that many in the coming years.
“Oklahoma continues to move forward with our investment in Innovation and new technologies, in order to diversify our economy. These efforts require a workforce skilled in the many technologies related to Aerospace, autonomous and defense, Biotechnology and Life Sciences, and energy diversification. Each of those areas will need the software engineering professionals produced by Holberton. Oklahoma is proud to have Holberton in Tulsa and excited about this new expansion and the many students that will benefit from the education they receive here,” said Elizabeth Hutt Pollard, Oklahoma Secretary of Science and Innovation.
Founded in Silicon Valley, and brought to Tulsa by the George Kaiser Family Foundation, Holberton Tulsa opened in 2019 and the first cohort began in 2020. The innovative software engineering school located in downtown Tulsa helps remove barriers to entry in the technology field. The 20-month curriculum provides a foundation in software programming, and specialized instruction in a preferred field of study, including augmented reality / virtual reality, machine learning, linux programming and advanced algorithms and full-stack web development.
Holberton Tulsa is dedicated to meeting the educational needs of Tulsa’s rapidly expanding technological community by preparing students academically and professionally to meet the constantly changing employment requirements needed to be successful in a career in software development and engineering.
